Log home at 172 Tall Pine Ln in the Boulder foothills, wraparound decks and stone chimney among the pines

172 Tall Pine Lane sits on 8.31 wooded acres in the foothills above Boulder. It is a true log home, built in 1988, with five bedrooms, four baths and about 4,753 square feet, plus a detached garage with a private ADU for friends and family. The logs carry the weight of the house, the ceilings rise and fall with the rooflines, four fireplaces anchor the rooms, and every window looks into ponderosa pine.

A referral and a new approach

Ann Cooper of RE/MAX of Boulder called me as a referral. She had just taken on this listing while it was already on the market, and she wanted to try something new and different. On our discovery call we looked at how other homes in the area were being presented, and the bar was low. Most listings nearby had a set of flat photos and a short clip, nothing that told you what it feels like to live up here. That gave us room to tell a real story.

The aid station

Ann’s husband is a professional road cyclist, and he knew something about this address most buyers would miss. The road below the house is one of the climbs Boulder riders love to train on. So we built the film around him. The FPV drone follows him as he rides up the dirt road to the house, steps inside and explores the home the way a rider uses an aid station: a place of comfort, rest and recharging. When he is ready, the camera follows him back out and off into the forest.

The film

One continuous line from the climb to the front door and through the house, flown FPV so the camera moves the way a rider does. The loop at the top of this page is a piece of it.

Three trips up the hill

Telling the story well meant going up the hill more than usual. Over three visits we flew the FPV film, made the photographs and a cinematic walkthrough, flew the drone for aerial stills and video, and captured a full Matterport tour with the Matterport Pro2 camera. We also set an overnight hyperlapse that started at 3 AM and ran until after sunrise, so the film holds the whole arc of a night in the trees, from starlight to the first sun on the ridge.

Inside the logs

Inside, the work was about warmth and weight. The great room opens under heavy beams and an antler chandelier, the stone fireplace holds the center of the house, and skylights pull light down through the timber. I kept the verticals true and let the wood tones stay rich and honest, the way they look in person on a late afternoon.

The primary suite is quiet and private, with its own fireplace and a timber ceiling that slopes with the roof. A small fireplace nook tucked under the stair says a lot about how this house was built: by hand, with time.

Why a concept matters

A home in the trees asks for a story with a reason behind it. When the agent, the owners and the photographer find that reason together, every frame pulls in the same direction. That is the heart of our luxury real estate photography across Boulder, Denver and the Front Range.
